Tara Plantation was a historic plantation located in Saint Francisville, Louisiana. It was built in the early 19th century by a wealthy Louisiana planter and businessman, Leonard L. Pennington. The plantation was named after the Hindi goddess Tara, as Pennington had business interests in India.
Tara Plantation was known for its large, Greek Revival-style mansion that was a popular filming location for movies and television shows, including the 1957 film "Raintree County" starring Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift. The house was also featured in the opening credits of the television series "North and South."
The plantation was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, but sadly, the mansion was destroyed in a fire in 1952. Today, only ruins of the original plantation house remain on the property, which is currently privately owned and not open to the public.
